After leaving our housesit in Perth we spent 8 days traveling up the west coast and back down to Perth. Our first stop was Kalbarri for 2 nights. We were hoping to see a little more of the National Park, but the hot weather didn’t allow that. We did drive into the park, stepped out the car briefly to see the views. We spent a little more time on the Coastal cliff sections of the park since the breeze made it almost bearable enough to snap a few pictures. It was there that we spotted out first pod of dolphins below. We also spotted our first wild emus driving into Kalbarri!
Our next stopping point was the Shark Bay area where we spent 3 nights in Denham. On our way in we stopped at Shell Beach with over 100km of shell-covered coastline. It was an amazing sight and felt great to wade out in the ankle deep water that went out about a half mile before dropping off to waist deep.
We had a nice cabin just across from the ocean in Denham and were only 20 minutes from Monkey Mia. We took a nice sunset cruise on the first night and the next morning woke early to see the dolphins come into shore a Monkey Mia. Every day, 5 female dolphins along with their babies come into the bay. The adult females are fed a small ration of fish by the conservation rangers. It was really a treat to see them up close and Simone was even chosen out of the crowd to feed one of them!
We spent the morning at the Monkey Mia Resort, reading our books and taking dips in the ocean. At 12:30 we boarded our wildlife sail with Shotover. We spent 3 hours at sea spotting wildlife including dolphins, dugongs, manta rays, guitar fish, and even 2 four foot long sea snakes. It was a really fun day and quite a deal since we got the sunset cruise free when we purchased the wildlife sail. On our way back into Denham we spotted another mother emu and her 6 babies!
Our last stop up the coast was Coral Bay. This amazingly clear and calm bay is home to the Ningaloo Reef, part of the longest continuous reef in the world. We had a nice couple of days relaxing under the shade structures and spotting fish and rays while snorkeling the crystal clear waters. It was just the relaxation we had been looking for.
We broke up the trip with 3-6 hour days stopping in Carnarvon and Geraldton for a night each before returning to Perth. Nothing exciting to report for either of those stops.
