For our first 3 nights in Bali we based ourselves in Sanur, a fairly quiet beachside town just 30 minutes from the airport. We would have 2 full days to explore before heading North to Ubud. Our first day we stayed close to the hotel, walking through town and along the beachfront path. We had heard about the hawkers (people selling everything from trinkets to watches to massages) and really weren’t bothered too much by them. A “no thank you” or shake of the head and a smile and they pretty much left us alone. We enjoyed a few cheap beers and the hotel’s lounge chairs on the beach. The people watching was great!
The next day we were picked up at 8am by our driver Naya. We had scoured the internet and found a recommendation for a driver through tripadvisor. After emailing back and forth with Kadek, the “boss” and setting up some itineraries we decided to go with him for 4 days. The first two would be with his friend Naya and the last 2 with Kadek. We were ready to explore and happy to not have to drive in the chaos that is Bali! Our first stop was Uluwatu Temple. This impressive temple is set on the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea and is home to lots of wild monkeys. When we arrived we were the only car there! We paid our small entry fee, dressed in our sarongs and headed in to take a look.
Our next stop was a 2 hour drive through the chaos of several cities to Tanah Lot Temple. This temple is set on a rock formation out in the ocean. During low tide you can get closer and many go to pray. This is a very busy temple with thousands of people visiting everyday, especially for sunset. Unfortunately (or fortunately) we missed sunset and the crowds. It was quite busy when we were there, but still bearable and very impressive.
