Jason’s First Impression
We usually do a first impression of a destination from our first twenty-four hours there, but we were only in the first town for a few hours, so it’s a little hard. We’re seeing Norway in a different way than either one of us thought, on a cruise ship. Although not the way we would have hoped to see the country, it was for us, one of the only ways we thought we could afford it. We had heard stories of how expensive things were in Norway, but until you see it with your own eyes it’s hard to believe. I haven’t heard how much the minimum wage here is, but when a burger is somewhere in the neighborhood of $30, you can bet it’s pretty high. If you want a coffee and cake for your afternoon treat, that’ll be $15. Needless to say, as much as we love food, we probably won’t be trying any of the local fare. As far as the people, they seem very nice and the landscape looks good, but what I want to see lies to the north in the fjords and the Arctic Circle. We’ll be on the ship for twenty nights and hit many ports so I’m sure we’ll see some amazing landscapes. The one I’m most interested to see is the Polar Ice Cap, because at the rate that it’s disappearing, it might not be there for much longer. I haven’t seen any Vikings or trolls yet, so I’m feeling pretty ripped off but I’m keeping my hopes up that we might get to see a polar bear. This wasn’t much of a first impression, but more of a couple of observations mixed in with a few of the things I’m looking forward to. I guess my first impression is that this place is expensive.
Simone’s First Impression
Well first of all this place isn’t nearly as cold as I thought it would be. People are actually outside in bathing suits sunbathing! The people appear happy and friendly although we haven’t had many interactions yet. The landscape is beautiful, green and mountainous. No polar bear or whale sightings yet, but I am keeping my eyes peeled! We have 20 nights to explore this coastline and I am very excited to get up north into the snow and ice. So far my impression is good, glad we are on a cruise where the food is included otherwise looking at the prices we wouldn’t be eating much!
