We were nominated not once, not twice, but three times for the Liebster Award while in China! We are finally getting around to answering the questions. So here’s some information about the award and a little more about us!
The award is meant to get newer travel blogs out there by promoting each other. It is really just a fun online chain letter, but it may help you to find some new blogs to follow.
The rules are simple
1. Thank the blogger who has nominated you
2. Answer the ten questions
3. Nominate 5 other travel bloggers (we changed from 10)
4. Ask them 10 questions
Since we were nominated 3 times we were able to pick our 10 questions! These are a combination of the 30 questions we were asked:
1. Where are you now and where to next?
We are currently on a 20 night cruise around Norway and the Arctic Circle! After we leave the ship in July we will spend some time in Holland before meeting up with friends in Denmark, Belgium and England.
2. How do you decide where to go next?
We had our route planned before we left home. It was just a broad plan of countries we wanted to visit and the best order. As we went we added places (Cambodia, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands and Belgium) and crossed others off the list (Nepal, Switzerland, France). It’s an evolving process since we don’t necessarily know where we want to visit in those countries until right before we arrive or even after arriving. Its worked well for us because it gives us the flexibility to stay if we like a place or leave if we don’t.
3. Most unusual food you have eaten on your travels?
Not exactly something we have eaten, but the oddest thing we have tried was Cat Poo Coffee in Bali, Indonesia! It sounds way worse than it is. Basically there is an animal called a Civiet, which is similar to a possum, that loves the fruit from coffee trees. The animals pick only the best fruit and eats it, only their body doesn’t digest the bean. The beans are then collected and washed well, before being roasted and used to make coffee.
4. What is the one thing you miss the most when you are far away from home?
Besides family and friends and of course our cat Jessie it’s definitely Mexican food and craft beer like Lagunitas. It’s hard to find the variety in food and beer that we are used to back home.
5. What is your favorite travel picture and the story behind it?
That’s a hard one! We have thousands of great pictures so its impossible to choose a favorite. This picture is from our day with Abel Tasman Canyons. We had an amazing time canyoning for the first time. It was completely unforgettable!
6. What is the travel memory you will always remember?
We met an amazing young man during our stay in Cambodia who was working at a hotel we stayed at. He was so friendly and immediately asked us if he could practice his English by talking with us. He was a university student studying English with the hope to become an English teacher one day. We enjoyed talking with him so much that we did so again for several hours each night during our stay. He not only told us about the history of his country, but also his upbringing, hopes and dreams. He had overcome so much and was determined to do great things. We are sure he will do so and he will always have a special place in our hearts.
7. Which country do you think has the best food?
This one is so hard! We love food and have had lots of great meals on this RTW journey. After a long debate we have settled on Thailand. Thai food is a favorite of ours at home, but it was WAY better in Thailand. We loved the differences between the food in the south and the food in the north and never tired of trying a new curry. The ability to get different types of food was also easy in Thailand, we had some really good Indian food while we were there and the selection for a vegetarian was endless, especially in Chiang Mai. The best thing about food in Thailand was the price! We regularly ate large meals for less than $5 for 2 mains, drinks and sometimes an appetizer. While in Bangkok we found a place with huge bowls of delicious noodle soup for under .80 cents!
8. What is the travel quote which describes your lifestyle the best?
9. What destination has surprised you the most? And why?
Australia! We were so excited to visit and had heard nothing but great things, but we were less than impressed. We visited during summer (our fault) and it was HOT! It was even too hot to enjoy the beach. We had a few problems while we were there, like our Campervan Fiasco, and just never quite got into a groove. We found the prices to be astronomical, especially food and went hungry most of the time. The animals were amazing and we are glad we went, but may have had a different experience if we had gone during the winter months!
10. What is your favorite place?
Our favorite country has been New Zealand. It is a place we would return to right now if we could! Everything about New Zealand was amazing, the people, the scenery, the camping, and even the rain made our 2.5 months there unforgettable!
