This month we had 10 days in New Zealand before flying to Australia for the last 20 days. We knew that Australia was going to be expensive, quite possibly the most expensive country we would visit. For our monthly expenses we were hoping for around $200 a day, but went over quite a bit. This was mostly for one reason, a campervan fiasco that we will tell you about soon. This issue cost us nearly $2000 and about $1500 is reflected in this month’s budget. Fuel was considerably cheaper in Australia, about a $1 less a liter, but camping so far has been more expensive (Under $30 in New Zealand to close to $40/night in Australia). We also spent 3 nights in an apartment in Christchurch as well as 3 unexpected nights in Cairns when the campervan issue arose. This month of course also had our flights from NZ to Australia.
Food was a bit more expensive this month. We had 2 great couples take us in for a few nights and we took them both out for a meal. It was great to be in a real bed for 5 nights and we really enjoyed the company of Matt and Laura (met in NZ) and Pam and Neville (met in Alaska).
We also did a few great activities this month! In New Zealand we did a guided sea kayak trip and went to a hot springs park. In Australia we went to the movies, took a tour of a rum distillery, did a daytrip to Whitehaven beach and visited the Australia Zoo. Jay also took to the water for a dive on the Great Barrier Reef, although that cost is not factored into the budget.
